Execution Warrant Issued For Second Az Death Row Inmate In Past Month

The Arizona Supreme Court on Tuesday issued the execution warrant for Frank Atwood, who was convicted of killing an 8-year-old girl in 1984.

TUCSON, AZ — Frank Atwood is the second death row inmate in Arizona to be scheduled within the past month for execution, after a hiatus in executions that lasted around eight years.

The Arizona Supreme Court on Tuesday issued an execution warrant for Atwood, setting his death date for June 8, according to court documents.

Atwood was convicted in 1987 of the 1984 kidnapping and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Tucson. Atwood had been released from the California State Penitentiary in 1984 after being incarcerated for a 1981 kidnapping conviction, according to court documents.

The first death row inmate set to be put to execution in Arizona since 2014 is Clarence Dixon, who is set to be put to death May 11. The state Supreme Court issued Dixon's execution warrant on April 5.
