TUCSON, AZ — An investigation is underway after a javelina was found hanging from a tree with multiple gunshot wounds in Tucson on Sunday.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is now offering a $1,500 reward for information that leads to an arrest in the unlawful killing.

The animal was found hanging by its hind legs with a rope tied to a tree branch near Escalante Road and Cindy Lane. It had been shot several times. Game and Fish officials believe the javelina was killed a few days before it was discovered.

“This was the act of a criminal, a person without regard for one of the state’s most precious resources, its wildlife,” Regional Supervisor Raul Vega of Game and Fish in Tucson said in a statement. “The act of hanging the javelina from the tree was a disgraceful display, and its multiple injuries suggested its death was intentional.”

Javelinas are found in central and southern Arizona, officials said.
