Motorist Is Dead After Crash At Kolb And 22nd In Tucson

A Tucson driver died Saturday from injuries sustained in a left-turn collision Jan. 12 at the intersection of Kolb and 22nd.

TUCSON, AZ — A Tucson driver died Saturday from injuries sustained in a vehicle crash Jan. 12 at the Kolb Road and 22nd Street intersection.

Around 11 a.m. on Jan. 12, Tucson Fire medics and Operations Divisions East police arrived at the 22nd Street and Kolb Road intersection in response to a reported serious-injury collision. After arriving, fire medics took one of the motorists involved in the crash to St. Joseph’s Hospital with injuries not deemed life threatening, police said.

Officers then interviewed witnesses at the intersection, who said a black 2000 Toyota minivan headed east on 22nd Street moved into the left turn lane, then into the intersection, to turn onto northbound Kolb Road. As the minivan started the left turn, a white 2011 Toyota Camry headed west on 22nd Street entered the intersection, and the two vehicles crashed.

Police determined the Camry driver wasn’t impaired when the collision occurred, but evidence and interviews conducted by police “indicate that speed does appear to be a factor in this collision,” police said. Officers then cited the Camry driver at the accident’s scene for speeding.

On Saturday, the Pima County medical examiner’s office notified the Tucson Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit that the minivan’s driver, Antonio Calva, 69, had died from his injuries.
