Hicks served on TUSD’s Governing Board from 2011-2018 and was president in the last two years. He had been hospitalized since Dec. 2020 with the coronavirus, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser set up to help his family.

"Anyone who knows Mike, knows he is a genuinely caring man who would freely give the shirt off his back for another," organizer Pilar Ruiz wrote. "We have all experienced Mike's hugs, support, and help. It is now time for us to all do what we can to support Mike and his family during this difficult time."
