Pima County Opens 2 New Coronavirus Vaccination Sites

Pima County's newest coronavirus vaccination sites opened Wednesday at the Kino Sports Complex and Banner University Medical Center.

TUCSON, AZ — Despite struggling with a shortfall of coronavirus vaccines, Pima County is forging ahead with plans to accelerate its vaccination plan.

Two new vaccination sites at the Kino Sports Complex and Banner University Medical Center North opened at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The original start time of 7:30 a.m. was slightly delayed due to inclement weather, with Tucson getting hit with snow and rain this week. Anyone with vaccination appointments between 7:30 and 9 a.m. will be rescheduled for the afternoon, the Pima County Health Department announced on Twitter.

The county is currently vaccinating those in priority 1B groups: those 75 and older, educators and first responders.

Pima County health officials have repeatedly asked the state and federal government to send them more doses of the vaccine. To date, the county said it has received 107,000 doses of the 136,100 promised, and administered 79,574 of them.

A new statewide advisory issued Tuesday by Gov. Doug Ducey will help speed up the slow vaccine rollout by allowing Arizona officials to reallocate unused doses to areas in need.
