Strong Thunderstorms Possible In Tucson This Weekend

The National Weather Service warns of possible winds stronger than 50 mph and rainfall of one inch per hour.

TUCSON, AZ — The 2021 Monsoon is not over yet.

It's highly likely that the Tucson area will see thunderstorms this weekend, although the National Weather Service is less sure about the exact timing.

The weather service predicts scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop across Southeastern Arizona Saturday afternoon. Storms are expected to continue overnight with an increased chance on Sunday.

Some of the storms could be strong ones, the weather service warned, with the possibility of gusty winds stronger than 50 mph with expected rainfall of 1 inch per hour.

The cause of these storms is an area of low pressure reinforced by a system heading down from the north that will combine with increased moisture, amping up the local risk of strong thunderstorms, the weather service said.

The weather service was still unsure as of Friday how soon the system would move into the area, meaning storms activity may begin Sunday instead of Saturday.

Chances of storms will decrease Monday, but will remain a possibility throughout next week, the weather service said.

Monsoon season, one of the wettest in Tucson's history, ends next Thursday, Sept. 30.
