Study Says: Arizona Is Least Charitable State

ARIZONA — Just in time for Giving Tuesday, WalletHub released a new report Tuesday ranking 2019’s Most Charitable States. While Arizona might score high among residents in the unique charms category, it certainly didn’t score high in the charitable endeavors arena, coming in dead last among the 50 states.

About 63 million U.S. residents spend a combined tally of nearly 8 billion volunteer hours annually, which service would be monetized at about $184 billion according to WalletHub.

Arizona is among the states contributing least to those 8 billion hours: While Arizona earned the lowest overall ranking, it came in 46th in the study’s Lowest Percentage of Population Who Donate Time category. Only those living in Mississippi, Rhode Island, Nevada and Kentucky volunteered less than Arizonans. Conversely, Utah earned the No. 1 ranking when it came to percentage of people who volunteer, followed by Minnesota and New Hampshire.

When it came to the Lowest Percentage of Population Collecting/Distributing Food, Arizona came in at No. 48, with only New Mexico and Rhode Island earning lower scores in that category.

Arizona also ranked No. 48 in the Fewest Charities Per Capita scores, followed by Utah and Nevada.

For the report’s total overall scores, 100 points were possible. This is where the No. 50 ranking came from: Arizona scored a total of 46.74, preceded by New Mexico at 47.12, Mississippi at 50.70 and Louisiana at 51.00.

States earning the highest overall scores were No. 1 Minnesota with a score of 71.25, followed by Utah with 71.24. Next came Maryland at 68.87, followed by Oregon at 66.77 and Ohio at 66.11.
