TUCSON, AZ — With Thanksgiving and Black Friday about a week away, many Tucson residents’ thoughts are turning to the big meal — and to the slashed-price shopping extravaganza. They might not know the “Black Friday” name was coined by Philadelphia police in the 1960s when they complained about congested roadways filled with pedestrians and motorists on the day. The day was also named “Black Friday” from a retail perspective, referencing when a store’s finances might move from “red” (or losing money) to “black” (or making a profit), blackfriday.com reported.

Park Place Mall, 5870 E. Broadway Blvd., Tucson – Open Thanksgiving 6 p.m. to midnight; Black Friday 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Foothills Mall, 7401 N. La Cholla Blvd., Tucson – Most restaurants and stores at Foothills Mall are closed on Thanksgiving and open on Black Friday. However, holiday hours and closures vary by retailer or eatery.
