UA's Management Info Systems, Geology Rank Highest On Annual List

TUCSON, AZ — Several University of Arizona graduate programs earned high marks in U.S. News & World Report's Best Graduate Schools rankings, which were released Tuesday.

In fact, a handful of UA's schools, programs and subspecialties were ranked among the top ten in the country on the annual list.

UA's Eller College of Management's program in management information systems ranked No. 3 overall (No. 1 among public universities) behind only MIT and Carnegie Mellon.

Science programs at UA also had a strong showing with geology in the Department of Geosciences ranking No. 2 overall behind the University of Texas.

UA's doctoral program in Earth sciences was tied for No. 9 overall (No. 5 among public universities). Among subspecialties, geochemistry ranked No. 6 overall (No. 4 among public universities) and geophysics/seismology was No. 12 overall (No. 8 among public universities).

"What I think sets us apart is the excellence of our faculty and students and the depth and breadth of our science," said Barbara Carrapa, professor and head of the Department of Geosciences. "We work on interesting, fundamental, interdisciplinary and societally relevant problems related to Earth and other planets."

Additionally, the UA's College of Medicine-Tucson scored high in several categories, including finishing tied for No. 16 overall on the diversity index.

The UA College of Medicine -Tucson also was ranked No. 27 in an index measuring how many graduates are practicing direct care in geographic regions that are experiencing health professional shortages. The College of Medicine-Phoenix was No. 65 in that category.

Meanwhile, UA's McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship tied for No. 23 overall in the U.S. News rankings, while Eller's business analytics program tied for No. 31 overall, its economics program was ranked No. 38, the part-time MBA program tied for No. 43 and the full-time MBA program tied for No. 47, the latter was a 17-spot increase over last year's rankings.

Other UA colleges, programs and subspecialties ranked highly by U.S News include:

• Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health: No. 31 (tie)
• College of Medicine-Tucson primary care: No. 78
• College of Medicine-Tucson rural health: No. 86
• College of Medicine-Tucson research: No. 74
• College of Nursing doctoral programs: No. 30 (tie)
• College of Nursing master's programs: No. 34 (tie)
• College of Public Health biostatistics: No. 56 (tie)
• College of Education: No. 54
• College of Education higher education administration: No. 18
• School of Government and Public Policy: No. 39 (tie)
• School of Government and Public Policy public management/leadership: No. 31 overall
• The James E. Rogers College of Law: No. 45

The college of law's highest-ranked subspecialty was legal writing, which was ranked No. 13.
