When it comes to the retail business, 2025 was a tough year.
Coresight Research projected that by the time the year is over, some 15,000 stores would close nationwide — nearly double last year's total.
California shoppers saw that firsthand: Several retailers completely went out of business — including Rite Aid and Forever 21 — while companies including Macy's and Kohl's trimmed their footprints, shuttering California stores in the process.

Here's a look at some of the national retailers that closed California locations in 2025:
Zara
Fast-fashion staple Zara shuttered 132 stores across multiple brands nationwide in 2025.

In California, that includes Zara's massive store in the San Francisco Centre mall, which closed in June.
Advance Auto Parts
Advance Auto Parts planned to close over 700 stores and four distribution centers. It closed all 138 of its California stores and distribution centers by the end of March.
At Home
Home furniture and decor retailer At Home shuttered most of its California stores by the end of September as part of its filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Eight Golden State stores were among 29 stores slated for closure in the fall. At the time, the retailer planned to keep open its locations in Riverside, Temecula and San Diego.
Claire's
Claire's, the iconic piercing and jewelry mall retailer, planned to close hundreds of stores as part of its filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Though a private equity firm bough the company's assets — and saved most of the stores from closing — about two dozen in California were shuttered, SFGate reported.
Foot Locker
Dick's Sporting Goods purchased sneaker chain Foot Locker in a $2.5 billion deal in September. As part of that, Dick's recently announced that it plans to close an undisclosed number of Foot Locker stores.
Around 15 Foot Locker stores were closed earlier this year, KTVU reported.

Forever 21
The iconic California-born fast fashion retailer closed all of its U.S. stores in 2025 following years of financial instability and a new Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.
It had over 50 locations in California at the beginning of the year. The retailer has shifted to an e-commerce model for its U.S. operations.
GameStop
Video game retailer and strip mall standby GameStop closed another round of stores this year after shuttering 600 locations in 2024.
The company shuttered over two dozen California locations in 2025.
JCPenney
Ubiquitous mall anchor JCPenney earlier this year announced it would close eight locations nationwide, including one in San Bruno, USA Today reported.
Joann
Crafting retailer Joann filed for bankruptcy in 2024, but continued operations after restructuring. After a second bankruptcy filing this year, the company shuttered all of its stores, including 75 in California.
Kohl's
Department store chain Kohl's announced plans to close 27 underperforming stores across the country by April, including eight in California.

Macy's
Iconic department store Macy's continued to trim its footprint this year as part of its "A Bold New Chapter" strategy. It closed nine locations in California. It plans to shutter even more stores by the end of next year.
Party City
Party supplies chain Party City closed all of its stores this year, including more than 75 locations in California.

Petco
San Diego-based pet supplies retailer Petco announced in September it would shutter over two dozen underperforming stores by the end of the year. It previously closed at least one location in California earlier in 2025, in Los Gatos, Newsweek reported.
Rite Aid
Pharmacy chain Rite Aid closed all of its 1,250 stores nationwide this year amid bankruptcy. Most were sold to rival pharmacy chains, though there are plenty of examples of vacant storefronts in California where Rite Aids once stood.
Walgreens
Last year, Walgreens announced it would close more than 1,200 stores over the following three years as part of an attempt to turn around its troubled finances. In California, its 2025 closures include 12 San Francisco stores.

CVS
Pharmacy chain CVS announced earlier this year that it planned to close 271 locations nationwide. At least two have been closed in California, in San Francisco and Sacramento, Newsweek reported.
Sears
The once-ubiquitous department store Sears was down to just eight locations nationwide at the beginning of the year. But then it closed its final Southern California locations, in Burbank and Whittier, leaving just one store left in the Golden State.
