3 Perish; 1 Woman Swept Away, But Survives As Storm Rages Across Southern California: Reports

A State of Emergency remained in effect on Thursday night.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Three people have perished, and one woman almost died after being swept away, since the start of the atmospheric river storm that is battering the region of Southern California, according to reports.

Last weekend, another man, 74, died as first responders tried to rescue him from his vehicle that was trapped in flood waters in Redding, the BBC reported, citing a local news outlet.

Then on Monday, a woman in her 70s lost consciousness and died after she "was knocked off a rock by a large wave and swept into the ocean" and then rescued at MacKerricher State Park in Mendocino County, the sheriff's office said in a statement.On Christmas Eve, a 64-year-old man died when a 75-foot tree fell on him outside of his family's home in the neighborhood of City Heights in San Diego when a 75ft-tall tree fell on him, crushing him, San Diego police and the family of Roberto Ruiz told NBC 7 San Diego.

Another woman on Wednesday was also swept away into treacherous waters, but survived, after being carried miles down San Jose Creek before she was rescued, the Los Angeles county fire department told The Los Angeles Times.

“She went downstream for a while,” Pauline McGee, a spokesperson for the department, told the outlet, adding that the woman was rescued at Workman Mill Road in San Jose Creek, and she was taken to a hospital.
