74 CA Schools Named Model Continuation High Schools

CALIFORNIA — Dozens of high schools in California were named Model Continuation High Schools for 2025.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced this week that 74 schools in the Golden State earned the designation for their efforts in offering flexible scheduling, instructional strategies, and counseling services tailored to students at risk of not graduating.

"The priority of our Model Continuation High Schools is to give students more than a diploma," Thurmond said in a statement. "The teachers and administrators aim to provide students with a student-centered approach that meets their diverse academic, social, and emotional needs and opportunities to explore options beyond high school, preparing students for the future whether they choose to pursue further education or join the workforce."

Continuation schools serve students who are behind on credits and at risk of not completing their education, providing them with alternative pathways to earn a high school diploma. There are currently 429 continuation high schools serving about 49,000 students throughout the state.

The newly designated Model Continuation High Schools are set to be honored in April at the California Continuation Education Association Plus state conference.
