CALIFORNIA — Macy's is closing nine stores in California, the department store chain announced Friday.

Macy's is shuttering several dozen stores as part of a previously announced turnaround plan to save the company.

In February 2024, the retailer announced it would close approximately 150 underperforming stores by 2026, while keeping about 350 locations. The majority of the stores are expected to close in the first quarter of 2025, the company said.

"Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy's stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service," Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy's, Inc., said in a statement.
