CALIFORNIA— Boeing has laid off more than 500 California employees as part of a plan to reduce its workforce by around 17,000, according to state documents and the company.

The company, headquartered in Arlington, Va., has cited financial strife following regulatory troubles, hits to its reputation and a strike resulting from overstaffing.

The cuts come as the embattled aerospace giant is still reeling in controversy following a pair of crashes of its 737 Max jetliner. The crashes have killed nearly 350 people. Then in January, a panel blew off another one of its airplanes mid-flight.

The layoffs were first announced in October and formally filed with the state on Nov. 15. The company has said that most laid off will remain on the payroll for two months and receive a severance package, according to multiple reports.

Nearly 400 Boeing workers were also laid off in Washingon state, according to multiple news outlets.
