CA Election Stats: County-By-County Party Registration Totals

While California has long been a blue stronghold, at least 10 counties have a predominantly red voter base. See how your county registered.

CALIFORNIA — Millions of residents are headed to the polls on Tuesday in this highly significant presidential election year, which will also see a new U.S. Senator and House representatives for California elected.

Down the ballot, voters will decide on candidates in county, municipal, and school district elections around the Golden State.

In California, there were 22,595,659 total registered voters as of Oct. 21, according to the latest registration report from California’s Secretary of State. Oct. 21 was also the last day voters could register ahead of the election.

Among the state's voters, some 10,355,081 (46%) were listed as Democrats while 5,638,209 (24%) were registered under the Republican party. About 22% of voters listed no party preference while 7% listed "other."

The counties with the largest increase in registered voters were Riverside, Orange, San Bernardino, San Diego and Los Angeles counties.

Though California is expected to lean Democratic in this election, several counties have a predominantly Republican voter registration base, according to registration data.

Here are 10 California counties that host the highest percentage of Republican registered voters:

  • Lassen (58.60%)
  • Modoc (56.58%)
  • Shasta (51.35%)
  • Tehama (49.64%)
  • Amador (48.98%)
  • Calaveras (48.11%)
  • Glenn (47.74%)
  • Mariposa (46.95%)
  • Tuolumne (46.13%)
  • Sierra (45.74%)

Here are 10 California counties that host the highest percentage of Democratic registered voters:

  • San Francisco (63.27%)
  • Marin (62.36%)
  • Santa Cruz (59.22%)
  • Alameda (59%)
  • Sonoma (56.57%)
  • San Mateo (55.78%)
  • Contra Costa (52.84%)
  • Los Angeles (52.13%)
  • Monterey (51.20%)
  • Yolo (50.69%)

And there are some trends to note. Since the last 15-day report of registration for a General Election in 2020, the percentage of voters registered with the Democratic Party modestly decreased from 46.13% to 45.83%. Meanwhile, the percentage of voters registered with the Republican Party inched up from 24.19% to 24.95%.
