CALIFORNIA — A Florida resident was the lone winner of Tuesday night's record-breaking $1.6 billion Mega Millions, but one lucky Californian is taking home a respectable second-place haul.

The winning numbers Tuesday were 13, 19, 20, 32, and 33, with a Mega Ball of 14.

California is the only Mega Millions state where a lower-tier prize can top one million dollars, acting as a mini-jackpot that rolls higher when previous tickets fail to match the first five correctly. Even though one such ticket matched on Aug. 1, lottery officials said sales from last week's drawing were strong enough to balloon the second-place price to almost $3.4 million.

Before Tuesday night's drawing, one customer bought a ticket that matched all five numbers and missed the Mega Ball —valued at $3,383,371 — at the Kwik Serv/Super Mac Food & Gas in Hilmar, a small town of 5,000 in the Central Valley.

Winners of lower-tier prizes have 180 days from the drawing to come forward and claim their prize.

According to the California Lottery, the historic Mega Millions run racked up nearly $300 million in sales since the jackpot started growing on April 21.
