Grocery Store Roof Collapses On 2 People: Authorities

MODESTO, CA — The roof of a grocery store collapsed Monday on two people in Northern California, according to authorities.

Emergency personnel responded just before 2:30 p.m. to Cost Less Food Company on North Yosemite Avenue in Oakdale, where they found a 20-by-20-foot section of the roof had collapsed in the front right corner of the store, according to the Modesto Fire Department.

The two people in the area of the collapse were removed before the fire department arrived, authorities said, adding one person was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

The collapse damaged sprinkler pipes, causing water to be released into the store, according to the fire department, which said the business would be closed for an unknown amount of time. Video and photos of the scene posted on social media by the department showed wet floors, disturbed produce, a large hole, and roof and ceiling material on the grocery items.
