California is home to dedicated first responders who go above and beyond to keep their communities safe. That’s why Patch and T-Mobile have teamed up to spotlight EMTs, firefighters and police officers who are making a difference every day.

Officer Emilio Gonzalez (Hayward) — In February, Officer Gonzalez of the Hayward Police Department saved the life of an 11-month-old baby who was choking on a rubber band. Calm under pressure, Gonzalez immediately radioed for medical help and followed first aid protocol, successfully clearing the baby's airway with firm back blows. Paramedics arrived shortly after and confirmed the baby was in good health. The heroic moment was captured on the officer’s body cam and shared on social media, showcasing his quick response and composure in a life-or-death situation. Read more here.

Captain Will Smith & Team (Temecula) — Captain Will Smith and his crew from Cal Fire/Riverside County were instrumental in saving a home full of memories during the January Eaton Fire in Altadena. After 24 hours of battling the blaze, the team arrived to find Deborah Ross trying to protect her home with a garden hose as flames ravaged the area. Despite the intense firestorm and Santa Ana winds, Smith and his team were able to shield Ross's home, which only suffered smoke damage. Ross later expressed her heartfelt gratitude, saying, “Thank you! I love you guys." Their bravery and quick action in the face of overwhelming odds exemplify the dedication of these first responders. Officer Sergio Ortega (Alameda) — In August 2023, Officer Sergio Ortega of the Alameda Police Department saved the life of a one-year-old baby who was unresponsive and not breathing. Responding swiftly to the emergency, Ortega arrived at the scene before other officers and began administering immediate aid. His quick thinking and composure helped the child show signs of responsiveness before paramedics arrived. For his heroic actions, Officer Ortega was awarded the Commander’s Commendation in September 2023. His bravery in a life-or-death situation highlights the dedication of first responders to protecting their community. Read more here.

Capt. James Worthington & Team (Lake Elsinore) — Fire Captain James Worthington and his team of paramedics, Corey Stearns and Ryan Wafford, were part of a special delivery on I-15 that will remain in their memories forever. After responding to a 911 call about a woman in labor on Highway 74, the team rushed to assist the expectant mother. Just 10 minutes into their drive to the hospital, the baby girl decided it was time to arrive, and the team successfully delivered her in the back of the ambulance. Both mother and daughter were in excellent condition when they reached the hospital. The story quickly became a heartwarming moment of hope and joy for the Riverside County community. Firefighter/Paramedic Nick Sibayan (Irvine) — In recognition of his quick thinking and bravery, Orange County Fire Authority Firefighter/Paramedic Nick Sibayan was honored with the First Responder Hero Award at the 2023 Orange County Heroes Awards. During an emergency call at a local hospital, Sibayan not only escorted a patient to the ER but also sprang into action when he witnessed an assault in progress. By subduing the assailant, Sibayan ensured the safety of everyone in the emergency room and allowed police to take control of the situation. His selflessness and decisiveness during a tense moment showcase the dedication of first responders to keeping their communities safe. Read more here.
