K-9 Who Seized Over 1,000 Pounds Of Drugs During 9-Year Career Retires

MERCED COUNTY, CA — California Highway Patrol K-9 Beny celebrated his retirement last week with praise, fanfare and a big juicy steak.

Beny spent nearly a decade with the highway patrol, starting in the Golden Gate Division in 2015 and transferring to the Central Division in 2018, according to a social media post from the agency's Merced area office in Atwater.

During his career, he earned national recognition, seized more than $10 million in cash from narcotics sales, and prevented 42 pounds of heroin, 206 pounds of fentanyl, 233 pounds of cocaine and 750 pounds of methamphetamine from reaching the street.

He is also a beloved community ambassador and visited many schools and events during his time on the force.

He received certificates of recognition from the offices of U.S. Rep. John Duarte and Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria, as well as praise from Merced County District Attorney Nicole Silveira.

“The highlight of the celebration was Beny finally receiving his much-deserved prime ribeye steak, fulfilling the public’s long-standing request,” according to the social media post. “Thank you, K9 Beny, for your incredible service and dedication.”
