Nevada Gun Shows Increase Violence In California: Study

A study says when there's a gun show in Nevada, there's more violence in nearby California.

CALIFORNIA -- A study released this week found that California violence is increased after a Nevada gun show.

Two weeks after a gun show in Nevada, deaths and injuries from gun violence jumped 70 percent in nearby California communities, according to a study by Annals of Internal Medicine.

The study examined gun shows between 2005 and 2013. Although an uptick in gun violence happened after Nevada gun shows, the same wasn't true for California gun shows. The Golden State is known for having the strictest gun laws, while Nevada does not require background checks.

"Gun shows in Nevada, but not California, were associated with local, short-term increases in firearm injuries in California," stated the study. "Differing associations for California versus Nevada gun shows may be due to California's stricter firearm regulations."

According to the study, firearms are the leading cause of deaths in the U.S. Gun ownership also increases the risk for suicides and murders.
