Gov. Gavin Newsom Newsom projected extreme confidence in the Nov. 4 election on Monday when he told supporters to stop donating to the Proposition 50 campaign, according to a report from the New York Times.

The idea was hatched during the governor's regular Zoom call with his political advisors last Friday. Since California's lone ballot measure was far ahead in the polls, his senior advisors told Newsom he should stop fundraising from small donors in the final days leading up to the election.

"I love it," he said, according to the Times.

The message is considered to be a highly unusual show of confidence just eight days before an election, which will decide whether Democrats can redraw congressional maps to oust five Republicans from their seats.

But Sean Clegg, a senior advisor to Newsom, told the New York Times that they aren't declaring victory just yet.

“We’ve met our fund-raising goals and we have a very strong program," he said.

Newsom's Monday email said that 1.2 million donors have raised $38 million in small donations over 10 weeks.

“It’s a little bit of man bites dog,” Clegg told the Times. “A politician sending an email not asking you for money, that’s actually asking you to stop sending money. I don’t know that this has ever happened before.”
