CALIFORNIA — Three California bakeries were recently named among the “Best Bakeries Across the U.S. Right Now” by The New York Times.

The newspaper spotlighted 22 businesses that represent America’s current “bakery renaissance.”

At Bakers Bench in Los Angeles, Jennifer Yee serves up vegan croissants, as well as cookies and muffins, including vegan offerings, according to the Times.

Gusto Bread in Long Beach draws from Mexican and Indigenous traditions, with Arturo Enciso and Ana Belén Salatino offering conchas, breads and the Nixtamal Queen, a kouign-amann with sourdough and nixtamalized corn, the newspaper reported.

At Quail and Condor in Healdsburg, Melissa Yanc and Sean McGaughey serve up sourdough and pastries, according to the Times.

"Seasonal treats like malted strawberry mini cakes and densely moist carrot cake also make the 70-mile drive up from San Francisco very much worthwhile," the newspaper reported.
