These 3 Historic CA Hotels Are Among America's Most Haunted

CALIFORNIA — Three of America’s top 25 haunted historic hotels are in California, according to Historic Hotels of America.

“For believers and skeptics alike, these hotels offer legends of guests who never want to leave and staff who never stop helping,” said a news release from Historic Hotels of America, the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s official program for recognizing historic hotels.

The 2024 Top 25 Historic Hotels of America Most Haunted Hotels list includes spooky destinations across the country, including the Golden State’s Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, Claremont Club & Spa in Berkeley and Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa in Sonoma.

“For some historic hotels, the past is not only present in their historic architecture and authentic character, but also — according to legends — in the ghostly spirits attracted to the historic hotel,” the news release said.

Established in 1888, Hotel del Coronado has its share of ghosts, but the most famous is Kate Morgan, who is rumored never to have left her room after her death in 1892, according to the news release. Other spectres include a Victorian-era girl, a man in period clothes and a woman wearing white.

The Claremont Club & Spa, a Fairmont hotel that offers haunted history tours each fall, is frequented by the ghost of a 6-year-old girl, the news release said. Guests often experience cold spots in the hotel and a tempermental elevator.

The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is haunted by Victoria, a beautiful woman who wed at the hotel. The ghost of an older man has also been seen and the hotel's Round Room is known to experience flickering lights, mysterious sounds, shadowy figures and running water.
