Hundreds of California cities allow "Safe and Sane" fireworks. It pays to know which ones do and which strictly prohibit all fireworks.

If you live in one of the nearly 300 California cities that allow “Safe and Sane” fireworks, chances are the party is at your house this Independence Day.

Despite the fire risk posed by the ongoing drought and blistering summer temperatures, many cities allow residents to buy and set off “Safe and Sane” fireworks. The State Fire Marshal allows the sale of “Safe and Sane” fireworks from noon on June 27th to noon on July 6th. Each city sets its own limits on how and when the fireworks can be set off.

One thing is certain, however, it pays to know where and when “Safe and Sane” fireworks are allowed because the fine for detonating fireworks illegally can be $50,000 and up to a year in jail, according to Cal Fire. Many California cities also fine anyone possessing even state-approved fireworks.

The National Fire Protection Association recently reported that fireworks started an estimated 31,302 fires in 2022, killing six people and causing $109 million in direct property damage. More than 10,200 people were hospitalized with fireworks-related injuries, the association found.

Fireworks such as sky rockets, bottle rockets, roman candles, firecrackers or any that fly through the air are prohibited.

In many cities, people are encouraged to buy the “Safe and Sane” fireworks as the sales are the primary fundraisers for school and community sports teams, choirs, and youth clubs. But in sweltering summertime California, a single stray spark can trigger a massive wildfire.

A fireworks stand is set up to sell "Safe and Sane" fireworks in California (Autumn Johnson).

Most of California’s major cities ban fireworks, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, all of San Diego County, and San Jose.
