While Black Friday is traditionally remembered for long, pre-dawn lines and crowded stores, last year, WalletHub says more Americans shopped from home than in stores.

Some 87.3 million made purchases online last year compared with the 81.7 million who braved shopping in person.

What's more, in recent years, Black Friday sales have begun earlier, giving shoppers time to spread out their purchases instead of attempting to grab everything in one chaotic go. However, whether this means the crowds will be less hectic this year remains to be seen.

JCPenney ranked as the best place to shop on Black Friday because it's offering an average discount of 74 percent. It is the seventh year the store has earned the top spot on WalletHub's annual report.

This year, the store is offering a $14,583.32 diamond engagement ring for $3,999.99.

Here are the retailers offering the biggest discounts, according to WalletHub:

  • JCPenney - 74% discount average
  • Kohl's - 45.39% discount average
  • Macy's - 44.46% discount average
  • The Home Depot - 35.63% discount average
  • BJ's - 31.26% discount average
  • Amazon - 29.63% discount average
  • Target - 29.36% discount average
  • Best Buy - 28.58% discount average
