Ascension Lutheran in Thousand Oaks will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the church’s founding and 60th anniversary of the opening of Ascension Lutheran School with a special worship service followed by a Family Fun Rally Day Festival September 10.

Community members are invited to either or both events to share the celebration. Special music and commemoration of this anniversary milestone will be part of the worship service. At the outdoor festival event, beginning at 11 o’clock, the high-spirited band Fiddle Leaf (@fiddleleafmusic) will be playing tunes both Irish and pop. A rock wall with monkey jumps, a bounce house, and a toddler bounce house (part of a planned toddler fun area) will be part of the action as well, along with games, face-painting and free Mr. Softee Ice Cream.

Ascension Senior Pastor Tim Delkeskamp notes that it’s inspiring “to think about how much this place, the ministry of the church and the school, has served the community in these last 75 and 60 years. You think of generations of people.”

He is upbeat, believing “the best is yet to come. We’re excited to be that light that shines the light of the world — to shine that light in our community where we can serve.”

Adds Ascension’s Pastor Julie McCain, “Ascension is an energizing place to be at the moment, and I'd attribute that both to the Holy Spirit and to the fact that the church, school, and ECC (Early Childhood Center) are collaborating and working together so often and so well. We really believe in lifting each other up and it shows in everything we're doing.”

Ascension’s anniversary will also include service opportunities; for the church, this day coincides with the Evangelical Church in America’s 10th Annual “God’s Work. Our Hands.” Sunday. Among those: a food pantry drive and packing of 300 Kits of Care for Lutheran World Relief, along with “home visits to some of our oldest friends this weekend,” says Pastor Steve Herder, who is coordinating these projects.

"Because we have received the love and grace of God in Jesus, we are always seeking ways to serve and love our neighbors here in our community and around the world!"
