Sheriff's Station Open House Canceled Due to Budget Cuts

SWAT team members and other specially trained deputies couldn't be scheduled for the event because of a lack of funds for overtime pay.

A lack of funding for overtime pay has pulled the plug on the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station open house that had been scheduled for Sept. 25.

The station could not afford to give the overtime hours to SWAT team members, Malibu Search and Rescue Team members, helicopter pilots and other specially trained employees to make an appearance at the event, said Lt. John Benedict.

"We can't get these folks out there on that date, that's the main crux," Benedict said.

Six months ago, the LA County Sheriff's Department had its budget slashed by $128 million.

Since then, special assignment deputies have been taking on regular patrolling duties to eliminate the need for overtime pay, Benedict said.

Benedict said he hopes the event will return next year.

"I look forward to having the same event, probably better, and a brighter future fiscally next year," he said.
