Burglary Suspect Caught Trying To Pry Open Safe: Police

Alameda Police credit a burglar alarm and an alert witness who called 911.

ALAMEDA, CA — One person is under arrest and items stolen from an Alameda business have been returned to their owner, according to the Alameda Police Department. When the suspect was captured, they were trying to pry open a stolen safe, APD said in a statement.

The theft happened at 4 a.m. Tuesday in the 1300 block of Park Street. Police dispatchers received simultaneous calls about a glass break notification from a business a suspicious person in the same area.

Officers who responded to the call found a person in the 1200 block of Park trying to pry open a safe. The person was detained.

Police learned that the safe, electronic devices, and tools were stolen from a nearby business. The stolen property was returned to the business.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of multiple offenses.

While releasing information about the burglary and arrest, police also released tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of burglary:

  • Ensure adequate lighting. Install bright exterior lighting around the perimeter of your building and ensure entry points are illuminated.
  • Invest in high-quality safes that are bolted to the floor.
  • Limit the amount of cash on site and make regular bank deposits.
  • Keep windows clear of obstructions to allow visibility from the street.
  • Invest in security systems such as alarms, cameras, motion lights, or glass break sensors.
