Dear Albany Community,

Our first week of having the option to take masks off outdoors on school campuses went smoothly. Students quickly understood that they needed to keep their mask on their chin, their arm, or in their pocket, and were great at masking up before going indoors. Elementary students were prepared for the change by our elementary principals, emphasizing responsibility, safety, and respect for others. Next Monday, March 14 will be our first regular school day under the new state and county guidance which ceases to mandate indoor masking. However, we strongly recommend indoor masking, consistent with the state and county recommendations. As stated in the Special Update sent earlier this week, there are some circumstances (coming back to school after COVID, or following an at-school exposure) where indoor masking will be required. 

Take Action for School Meals

The USDA child nutrition waivers are in jeopardy in the giant Omnibus Bill that authorizes federal funding for many programs. The waivers have created the ability to serve all children free breakfast, lunch, and snacks through AUSD Food Service. If the waiver provision is lost, there will be lower reimbursement rates, coupled with increasing food costs, can lead to the need to make up for food service losses from AUSD’s general fund. Please consider filling out this link to take action on extending waivers. 

Additional Free COVID Test Kits

The federal government is providing more free rapid at-home COVID test kits. If you have already received four rapid tests, you are now able to order four more. If you haven’t gotten any of these free tests, you can put in an order for four, and then immediately submit another order for four more. Go to www.covidtests.gov to place your order. This is the ideal way to obtain rapid test kits. 

Welcome AUSD’s New Executive Director!

After a rigorous interview process involving several excellent candidates, Albany Middle School Principal Deborah Brill was chosen to fill the upcoming vacancy for AUSD’s Executive Director of Student Services, when our treasured Alexia Ritchie retires at the end of this school year, after 29 years of outstanding service to Albany Unified. Ms. Brill has served Albany schools for 22 years, and was recently recognized as Middle School Principal of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA). Please welcome Ms. Brill in her new role effective July 1, 2022.

Winter Sports Were Spectacular!
