
Beverly White, veteran general assignment reporter for the “Channel Four News” who appears during prime time on KNBC, Los Angeles, will be the featured speaker at Altadena Baptist Church's Black History Celebration, Sunday, February 19, 5:00 PM.
The program's theme will be “United We Stand,”with an emphasis on the creative connections between various ethnic groups that have continued to develop since the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
Beverly White is a local area resident, and she is familiar with the various ethnic and racial threads that form the fabric of the Altadena/Pasadena community.

Her own journey as a pioneering African-American woman in a very competitive profession has been highlighted by her 2008 recognition with a “Leadership Award” from California Legislative Black Caucus. She is currently the President of the Black Journalists Association of Southern California.
Altadena Baptist Church has been a racially-integrated congregation since the mid 1970s, and this is its 28th annual Black History Celebration.

In addition to Beverly White's talk, the program will include music by the church's Gospel Choir and several local vocalists, as well as historical readings reflecting the struggle for equality in America.
A unique spice will be added to the flavor of the event by the musical performance of jazz guitarist Rogelio Mitchell.. The Panamanian-born Mitchell draws from various musical styles of the Caribbean, with a unique blend of calypso, reggae, soca and jazz. He has performed throughout South and CentralAmerica, as well as at several prominent U.S. Jazz festivals.
All area residents are cordially invited to join in the celebration and to stay afterward for a free soul-food dinner as guests of the church.
A replica Tuskegee Airmen leather jacket, complete with World War II insignias and a leather cap, will be offered through a raffle. Donations for raffle tickets will help cover the costs of the event.
