Owen Brown Grave Marker To Be Reinstalled In Altadena: Report

ALTADENA, CA — According to a report from the Pasadena Star News, the gravestone of an abolitionist buried in Altadena will soon be reinstalled.

The marker for the grave of Owen Brown was originally lost in 2002 after a previous owner of the land containing the gravesite rolled it down a hill, the paper reported. The marker resurfaced 10 years later after a resident came across it while walking in the area.

However, the marker was never reinstalled. Preservationists told the paper the grave marker's reinstallation is expected to occur within the next several months.

Preservationists have fought to maintain the site and formed the Owen Brown Gravesite Committee to oversee its restoration and preservation.

The committee entered into an agreement in 2019 with the site's current landowners allowing the grave and the land surrounding it to be purchased for preservation, the Star News reported.

Brown was the son of famed abolitionist John Brown, who led a failed slave uprising at Harpers Ferry in 1859. Brown became a fugitive from the law following his father's capture by the U.S. Marines and eventually settled in the Altadena area. He died at the age of 64 and was buried at Little Round Top near his cabin.
