📰 News we're reading

1. Los Angeles bear trap catches wrong beast in Altadena (nypost.com) — An Altadena homeowner is still sharing his house with a 550‑pound black bear after state wildlife officials accidentally trapped a different bear using a baited metal cage in his driveway. The captured bear was tagged and relocated, but officials haven’t yet managed to coax the much larger animal out from the crawl space beneath his home, despite multiple tactics tried just days before Christmas.

2. Tournament of Roses offers free parade tickets to wildfire-impacted residents (heysocal.com) — Altadena residents affected by the recent Eaton and Palisades wildfires can receive free grandstand seats to the Rose Parade through local groups including the Altadena Town Council. The Tournament of Roses is also giving away thousands of complimentary Floatfest tickets and a limited number of tickets to other Rose Parade–related events for those most impacted by the fires.

3. Rose Parade float sparks backlash as firefighters asks for 'more syrup' (foxla.com) — Altadena fire survivors are criticizing a Sierra Madre Rose Parade float showing firefighters asking for more syrup on pancakes, saying it feels insensitive after hydrants ran dry during January’s deadly wildfires. Local residents argue the design minimizes their trauma, while organizers insist it was meant to honor firefighters and teamwork, not reference the disaster.

4. 12th Annual Imagine Little Tokyo Short Story Contest — Adult: Fall Seven Times (rafu.com) — Altadena residents in this story are rebuilding after a destructive local fire, with family members helping distribute food boxes to fellow fire victims. Through memories of growing up in Altadena and caring for her grandmother, the narrator connects the community’s post-fire resilience to a Japanese proverb about standing up after repeated hardship.

5. LOCALIZE IT: Marching bands, equestrian units from several states featured in Rose Parade on Jan. 1 (newspressnow.com) — If you’re watching the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day, keep an eye out for local pride: the Los Hermanos Banuelos Charro Team from Altadena will ride among elite equestrian units. The parade and Rose Bowl game lineup feature performers and teams from across the country, but Altadena gets a special on-screen moment amid the national spotlight.
