Report: Assembly Drops $200K Fighting Spending Records Suit

The lawsuits sparked by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino's protest over having his budget slashed as "retaliation" for a vote wound up costing the Assembly nearly $200,000 to fight, The Sacramento Bee reports.

The California State Assembly did not want it's legislator's office budgets made public knowledge, and it spent $200,000 in legal fees and other expenses trying to keep it under wrap, according to a report in the Sacramento Bee.

After Portantino's public records request to see office budgets for each legislator was denied, a .  A judge disagreed with the Assembly's interpretation of the law and ordered that they release the records to the newspapers.

The Assembly spent $123,945 fighting the suit and was ordered to cover about $75,000 in legal fees accrued by the newspapers when it lost in court, according to the Sacramento Bee report.
