During the fall 2024 semester, community college students throughout California – from San Francisco to San Diego – enrolled in online courses at Citrus College in Glendora.

Thanks to the California Virtual Campus (CVC) Exchange, students enrolled in any of California's 116 community colleges are able to attend online classes at Citrus College. Through this initiative, they avoid wait lists and long-distance commutes as they complete prerequisites, meet general education requirements and pursue their academic goals.

The CVC Exchange is a statewide effort designed to increase student access and expand educational opportunities. As a result, California community college students can tap into thousands of classes and gain the flexibility, options and pathways needed to achieve their objectives.

The CVC was established by the California Community Colleges System in 2013. Upon becoming a Teaching College in winter 2023, Citrus College expanded its online course offerings to students statewide. With this certification, Citrus College has earned the privilege of conducting Peer Online Course Reviews, a three-step evaluation process ensuring that courses meet stringent criteria. Courses that meet these standards earn a "Quality Badge," distinguishing them on the CVC Exchange and enhancing their visibility in search results.

During the first semester in the CVC Exchange, Citrus College enrolled 166 students from community colleges throughout the state. Simultaneously, 21 Citrus College students took advantage of the CVC Exchange and enrolled at other eligible colleges. The enrollment process was seamless for all individuals.

By enrolling in CVC Exchange classes, students gain access to a broader range of resources that might not be available to them otherwise. First, a "Course Finder" tool can be used to search and register for classes based on degree and transfer requirements. Additionally, cross-enrollment allows students to take online classes at any participating Teaching College without having to complete a separate college application.

The initiative also offers distinct benefits for Citrus College. Counselors can leverage the CVC to provide targeted guidance, ultimately contributing to higher completion rates. The initiative provides several additional advantages, including a more inclusive and engaging academic environment and streamlined academic progress.

As Citrus College continues to grow and evolve within the CVC, we're excited to explore new opportunities and deepen our commitment to student success. By expanding access to high-quality online courses, we're helping to ensure that students across California have the flexibility and support they need to achieve their academic goals.

As president of the Citrus Community College District Board of Trustees, I am grateful for the many faculty and staff members who have invested countless hours of work and coordination to bring the college's participation in the CVC Exchange to fruition. I look forward to seeing the many ways our college will empower students from our region and beyond to achieve their educational aspirations. I'm also excited that even more people will be able to experience the unique spirit and community that makes Citrus College truly special.
