CHP Logs Just Two Traffic Deaths, 248 DUI Arrests

DUI arrest rate over the holiday weekend in Los Angeles County increases slightly over last year.

California Highway Patrol officers logged two traffic deaths and 248 drunken driving arrests in Los Angeles County in the first 60 hours of a "maximum deployment'' effort over the New Year's holiday weekend.

Two fatalities occurred on Los Angeles County roads between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. today, according to the state police agency, which patrols area freeways and some surface roads. Its figures do not include deaths or drunken driving arrests handled by municipal police departments or county sheriff's departments.

In Los Angeles County, the CHP arrested 248 motorists for suspicion of drunken driving over 60 hours, up from 228 during the same time frame last year.

Statewide, the CHP logged 18 traffic deaths, down from 22 last year.
Drunken driving arrests statewide totaled 1,181 so far, up from 961 last year.
