City to Hold Budget Hearing On September 25

The Baldwin Park City Council has scheduled a special meeting next Wednesday to discuss the 2013-14 budget.

As noted last week on the site, the the city recently posted its 2013-14 budget estimate online.

The document shows the city is projecting to run a general fund deficit of just over $3.6 million for the year, bringing the city's reserve funds down below $1 million.

Additionally, the city has been discussing long-term fiscal concerns for the city involving the Baldwin Park Police Department.

A city document on Baldwin Park's financial future that was heard at Wednesday's council meeting states that the city needs to either shut down its Police Department and contract with the County Sheriff's Department or raise taxes.

The city's budget and financial future planning documents notes that the city is facing an annual deficit of $3 million to $4.9 million for the next 10 years and says the city has "limited options" for what to do about it.  The documents then lists the two above options as the only ones the city has.

If the city was to levy a parcel tax on each household in the city, it would need about $290 per parcel, according to the documents.

The city's report on Baldwin Park's financial future can be viewed here.  To see the city's full budget for this year, including budgets by department, revenue reports and more, visit the Baldwin Park's website here.

The meeting will be at City Hall and starts at 6 p.m.
