Dog Attacks West Covina Police Officers Seeking Suspect

The dog bit one officer in a leg, and then charged the second officer, forcing him to fire his weapon at the dog, police said.

WEST COVINA, CA - A West Covina police officer shot and killed a large dog who charged at him in the midst of a chase of a suspect wanted for warrants Monday, police said.

Officers in a patrol car noticed Ramon Cardenas Lopez in front of his house in the 1800 block of Jennifer Place and immediately tried to stop him, police said.

Lopez looked at the officers and ran. The officers chased Lopez out of his home, into the backyard. The dog bit one officer in a leg, and then charged the second officer, forcing him to fire his weapon at the dog, police said.

Lopez, 38, was arrested on suspicion of battery upon a peace officer and resisting arrest. He also was booked for resisting arrest in a previous case, drug possession and driving on a suspended license.

Lopez's bail was set at $85,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned in West Covina Superior Court at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
