UPDATE: Metrolink Fatally Strikes Bicyclist in Covina

The accident happened near Azusa Avenue just west of Covina.

A bicyclist was killed after being struck by a Metrolink train near Azusa Avenue just west of Covina, according to the transit agency.

The accident happened at around 1:38 p.m. and paramedics pronounced the person dead at the scene. Covina Police Department does not know why the person was on the tracks at Front Street and Azusa Avenue.

The person was only identified as a man and police are not releasing age or any other identifying information at this time, Sgt. Gregg Peterson said.

Azusa Avenue between San Bernardino Road and Cypress Street was closed because of the accident.

The train was an eastbound San Bernardino Line 310 with 169 people on board but no injuries to passengers were reported, Metrolink spokesman Scott Johnson said.

The 3:10 p.m. San Bernardino Line 329 to Los Angeles has been canceled because of the accident and buses have been provided as an alternative, he said.

All rail traffic between the Covina and Baldwin Park stations have been stopped until further notice because of the ongoing investigation, Johnson said.

The incident is being investigated by the Covina Police Department Traffic Division, Peterson said.
