A total of 11 schools in Riverside County were among 336 schools selected statewide for the Distinguished Schools program, which rewards schools in one of two categories — closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance, according to the California Department of Education.
“It is my pleasure to honor and recognize these 336 elementary schools for their efforts to provide exemplary public education to all students. Excellent elementary schools play a critical role in the life outcomes of our young people,” Thurmond said. “This year’s California Distinguished Schools celebration provides us with an opportunity to recognize the hard work of our elementary educators and school staff who help our students discover passions and experiences that will propel them.”

This year, the program recognized elementary schools. Elementary schools and middle and high schools are awarded in alternate years so that schools awarded can hold a title for two years.
The elementary schools selected this year were "illustrative of the persistence and promise of California’s students, educators, and schools," according to a news release from California's Department of Education.
Qualifying schools had to enroll 40 percent of students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. The campuses also demonstrated exceptional growth in English or math to close achievement gaps.
The schools recognized for Exceptional Student Performance showed a strong indicator of student engagement as well as a positive school climate, according to the release.
