58-Year-Old Inmate With Drug-Use History Dies At Banning Jail

BANNING, CA — An inmate with a long history of run-ins with local law enforcement — most of which was over his alleged drug use — died over the weekend at Banning's Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility.
Charles Darren Giurbino, 58, of Hemet was pronounced dead Saturday at the jail's intake area, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Jail personnel "immediately administered life-saving measures" on Giurbino. Additionally, paramedics assumed the efforts but the inmate died at the scene, the sheriff's department reported.

There were no signs of foul play, according to the sheriff's department.
Jail records show Giurbino was arrested Saturday morning in San Jacinto on suspicion of misdemeanor drug charges. He was in and out of custody since 1998 in Riverside County, mostly due to his alleged drug use, court records show.
