Attempted Rape At Knifepoint Reported In Whitewater: RSO

CABAZON, CA — A 54-year-old man suspected of attempting to rape a woman while armed with a knife was behind bars Monday after being arrested in Whitewater.

Bryan Vines Burge was arrested and booked into Benoit Detention Center in Indio on Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder, attempted rape and second degree burglary.

Deputies responded to a call around 7:10 a.m. Saturday in the 60000 block of Dillon Road to a report of a rape attempt, according to Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Wenndy Brito-Gonzalez.

The victim, only identified as a woman, told authorities that a man armed with a knife allegedly tried to rape her, Brito-Gonzalez said.

She was able to escape and call for help, according to the sheriff's department.

Deputies later located and arrested Burge, Brito-Gonzalez said.

The motive or circumstances surrounding the alleged attack were not immediately known.

Burge was held on $1 million bail.
