Banning Student Leads Food Drive Effort: 'My Chance To Give Back'
Jenny Gonzalez, a senior at New Horizon High School, exceeded her goal of helping to feed five families.

BANNING, CA — Jenny Gonzalez, a senior at New Horizon High School, says she knows what it's like to be part of a family that needs a little extra help. That's why she chose to take the lead on organizing a local food drive in Banning.
Gonzalez took the reigns to organize the Coombs H.E.L.P. Food Drive and collected six boxes of non-perishable food items including canned corn, green beans, mashed potatoes, rice, baking goods and juice, according to a release from Banning Unified School District.
"I understand what it feels like to be a family in need. This is my chance to give back," she said. "It's not about me, it's about making a difference for families who need it most."

Her goal was to help at least five families, but she surpassed that goal, the district said. The goods, gathered by students and staff under Gonzalez, will be donated to H.E.L.P. (Hope Empathy Love and Prayer), a 40-year-old foundation in Banning.
"Jenny demonstrates the power of student leadership and the impact one individual can have on an entire school and community. She is a shining example of the dedication and compassion we hope to inspire in all our students," Superintendent Terrence Davis said.

Gonzalez's efforts fulfilled her community service hours and also inspired others to participate to earn their required hours for graduation.
“Jenny’s initiative and selflessness reflect the values of our school and
community," Principal Dr. Melissa Lee said.
Gonzalez will graduate this December and plans to enlist in the military to become a pediatric nurse. She says her mother is her greatest inspiration.
"This will set me up for success, and I hope to make my family proud," she said.
