"The suspect produced a weapon and fired upon that officer," a Riverside Police Department spokesperson said during a news conference on Monday evening.
Moye was able to make a call for help and at least three other CHP officers responded to the scene, as well as Riverside Police Departmentofficers and Riverside County sheriff's deputies.
The first CHP officers to arrive engaged in a gun battle with the suspect and ultimately mortally wounded him. Two other CHP officers were injured, one critically and another suffered minor injuries, Parker said. All three wounded officers were rushed to a hospital, one wasairlifted, another taken in a CHP vehicle. The officer who was taken by helicopter was pronounced dead at the hospital, Parker said.
The suspect was transported to a hospital after also being shot, and also died, according to police.
There were indications that several passers-by were hit by flying glass or "shrapnel" during the gunfire, and Riverside Fire Department paramedics were searching for those parties in the area. At the press conference, police said they believe at least one civilian was injured by something.
"We believe there was a civilian who was struck by something," police said, adding that it may have been "a fragment or glass" and that it was "not believed to be a bullet."
