BANNING, CA — A courtroom deputy stabbed a San Bernardino man Wednesday after the inmate attempted to grab the gun from his holster, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said Joseph Bashor, 20, was in court at the Banning Justice Center for a hearing related to charges of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. Deputies allege Bashor, who was wearing restraints, became uncooperative with them inside the courtroom and a physical struggle ensued.

During the altercation, investigators allege Bashor grabbed one deputy's holstered firearm and tried to take it. The deputy responded by stabbing him once, and authorities subdued the inmate before providing medical aid. Medics took Bashor to a local hospital to receive treatment, and he was discharged and rebooked into the Larry Smith Correctional Facility soon after, authorities said.
