Details of a fatal head-on crash early Saturday on Gilman Springs Road south of the Badlands and southwest of Beaumont were re-capped Monday by the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported about 12:35 a.m. July 27 on eastbound Gilman Springs Road, east of Jackrabbit Trail, according to the CHP.
Oscar Munoz Torres, 29, of Hemet, was driving a 1990 Toyota truck east on Gilman Springs, and Luis Padilla, 32, of Los Angeles, was driving a 1999 Ford sedan west on Gilman Springs, according to the CHP.
"Torres failed to maintain control of his truck and swerved into oncoming traffic," CHP spokesman Darren Meyer said in a statement. "The front of the Ford collided with the right side of the Toyota. The impact caused major damage to both vehicles."
Torres was not wearing a seatbelt and he sustained fatal injuries, Meyer said. Torres was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Padilla and his passenger were restrained properly with lap-shoulder seatbelts," Meyer said. "Both he and his 57 year old passenger, Barocio Lopez, were transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries."
A collision investigation by San Gorgonio Pass CHP personnel was continuing.
