SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, CA — A dog attack that claimed the life of a 51-year-old woman last week was the second mauling to happen in the county in just two weeks.

On July 17, just before 10 a.m., San Bernardino County deputies were called to a home in the 30000 block of Newberry Road in Newberry Springs after a 17-year-old girl was attacked by a pack of dogs while she was out for a jog.

According to authorities, the girl's parents said she was attacked by 10 or more large-breed dogs that bit her several times on her legs and arms. The bites caused large cuts, abrasions and removed flesh.

A Good Samaritan rescued the girl from the dog attack, authorities said. She was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center due to the extent of her injuries.

After an investigation, deputies determined the dogs belonged to a resident of Newberry Springs and were not fenced or leashed at the time of the incident. San Bernardino Animal Control responded to the scene and seized 16 dogs from the area.

Police said the woman was bitten multiple times by the dogs, according to the Victorville Daily Press. The pack included more than a dozen dogs.

The woman was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries, reports said. She was later identified as 51-year-old Teodora Mendoza.
