Corporal Mike Powell rescued the horses in the evening of Dec. 8.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA -- A Riverside County sheriff's corporal was applauded last week for saving horses from a burning barn. Cpl. Mike Powell reportedly saved the horses in the evening of Dec. 8 while he was off-duty.
In a video posted on Twitter, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said Powell "discovered a barn with several horses fully engulfed in flames."
"He immediately called CalFire and then entered the barn to attempt to free the horses," the video said. "Although he was met with extreme heat and flames, Cpl. Powell remained in the barn until all the horses were freed."
