BANNING, CA — Banning Unified School District is proud to announce that Maria Lopez, Dual Immersion English Language Arts and History teacher and AVID Lead at Nicolet Middle School, has been named a 2026 California League of Middle Schools (CLMS) Educator of the Year finalist, one of 14 finalists in her active region, the district shared in a recent news release.

Ms. Lopez was named a regional finalist but did not advance beyond the regional selection round.

The CLMS Educator of the Year Award is presented annually to outstanding middle school educators across California who demonstrate exceptional commitment to teaching and student success. Following nomination by a school administrator, candidates advance through a competitive selection process that includes a formal application and a recorded video response centered on the theme “Legacy,” highlighting how their educational journey has shaped both their practice and the students they serve. Finalists’ submissions are reviewed by a voting panel, with Educators of the Year selected at the regional level through this process.
