BANNING, CA — A tipster was pivotal in ending an illegal gambling ring at a Banning vape store, according to the local police department.

A tip led officers from the Banning Police Patrol Division and the Homeless Liaison Officer took decisive action on Aug. 27, after receiving a tip from a citizen regarding possible illegal gambling at Vape Town, 580 West Ramsey Street.

Thanks to the initiative and dedication of our patrol officers, an investigation was launched, uncovering not only the suspected illegal gambling but also the unlicensed sale of marijuana and related controlled substances.

Officers prepared and obtained a search warrant, which was executed by the San Gorgonio Regional Gang Task Force.

During the search, officers seized:
  • $4,225.07 in illegal gambling funds,
  • 48 pounds of marijuana and mushrooms,
  • An illegal coin push gambling machine.

Lt. and acting Capt. Brandon Smith of the Banning Police Department spoke on the operation as being a collaborative effort.

Police and Code Enforcement Officers issued citations to the business and the Fire Marshal conducted inspections on the same day, ensuring the operation was "thorough and effective," Smith said, adding:

"This demonstrates the commitment and professionalism of our patrol officers, who took a tip seriously, conducted a thorough investigation, and ensured the law was enforced. Their vigilance and persistence led to this significant result, keeping our community safe."

This is an open investigation; no arrests have yet been made, and the business remains open as of Tuesday, according to Acting Capt. Smith, who said the department was currently "working with the city on some elements regarding Vape Town's business license."

An attempt to reach Vape Town went unanswered, as voicemail for that business was full as of this report.
