Juvenile Injured, Hit By Car While Crossing Street In Riverside

RIVERSIDE, CA — A juvenile pedestrian remained in critical condition Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle in a chain-reaction crash caused by a driver who ran a red light in Riverside, authorities said.

The collision occurred just before 3:45 p.m. Saturday when a Mercedes SUV traveling northbound on Jackson Street ran a red light and hit a Chevrolet Cruze heading westbound on Garfield Street, according to the Riverside Police Department.

The crash caused one of the vehicles to strike the juvenile pedestrian, who was crossing Jackson Street in the crosswalk, according to Sgt. Ryan Wilson.

The force of the impact threw the juvenile into a Toyota Camry that was stopped at the red light for southbound Jackson Street, he said.

"The juvenile sustained serious injuries and was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center in critical condition," Wilson said.

Police did not say whether impaired driving was a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation.
